Maritime UK Chair, Harry Theochari, has written to the new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, stressing the importance of the sector to national prosperity and identifing key priorities for the UK's maritime industries. These include protecting freedom of navigation, coastal economic development, decarbonization, enhancing the UK's maritime competitiveness and developing the maritime workforce. The letter also sets out immediate steps the sector wishes to see on Brexit:


The port of Rotterdam achieved throughput of 240.7 million tonnes in the first six months of 2019. That is 3.4% more than in the first six months of 2018. Container throughput, one of the strategic priorities of the Port Authority, rose by 4.8% (in tonnes, +6.4% in TEU) by comparison with the first six months of 2018, which is also a new throughput record. That growth was mainly due to higher import and transhipment volumes.

Container traffic volumes on China – Europe – China routes serviced by the Joint stock company “United Transport and Logistics Company – Eurasian Rail Alliance” (UTLC ERA) have increased to 135,189 TEU during the first 6 months of 2019, up by 34% on a year-to-year (YTY) basis. For the same time period the traffic volume from Europe to China amounted to 56,921 TEU with 78,268 TEU for return China – Europe trips. Growth YTY compared with the same period of 2018 was 45% and 27%, respectively.
