The Swedish Port of Gävle and its Turkish operator Yilport will invest SEK 700m (approx. EUR 70m) in a new and fully crane-equipped quay, to be completed in Q4 2019.
Thanks to the investment, the terminal's annual handling capacity is to increase to 600k TEU. Once operational, the facility will be able to accommodate four ships simultaneously.
"Within a 250 kilometre radius of Gävle, almost 17 million tonnes of steel, paper, and timber are produced every year. A lot of it is already being exported by sea, containerised and through us, and that volume will definitely grow," Eryn Dinyovszky, General Manager, Yilport Nordic said.
Fredrik Svanbom, CEO, the Port of Gävle, added, "With stricter requirements for more environmentally sustainable transportation solutions, we are in an optimal location. The Port of Gävle is just two hours from Stockholm. First class road and rail connections make it beneficial for cargo owners, not only just in our region but also in other parts of Sweden, to increase their imports through the Port of Gävle. Our extensive new investments generate a completely new environment for what I like to call The Northern Port of Stockholm."
