Finnish innovation helps Swedes with Covid-19

2021 04 13

The Finnish company WellO2 has developed a unique product for breathing training. Attention is now being paid to the breathing tool in Sweden – as it helps Swedes with long-term symptoms after Covid-19.

Sweden has been hit hard by Covid-19 and during the winter, a new growing group of patients has attracted media attention: Those who suffer from long-term symptoms after Covid-19, called long-term-covid. One of them is 50-year-old Annika Johansson in Stockholm. She has asthma and had impaired oxygenation after Covid-19.

She then started breathing training with the Finnish breathing tool WellO2. Her breathing difficulties decreased and the nocturnal cough disappeared. Breathing as well as fitness improved. Her oxygenation has now increased from the previous 91 percent with light physical exertion to 97 percent with moderate exertion.

Unique combination of two proven methods

The breathing tool WellO2 is a Finnish innovation that was launched in 2016 and has sold over 50.000 products in Finland.

– WellO2 is a globally patented technology that combines breathing with resistance and inhalation of water vapor. The training is very simple, says Anssi Sovijärvi, lung specialist and professor emeritus in clinical physiology at the University of Helsinki.

Helps with rehabilitation after Covid-19

Annika Johansson, who has had reduced discomfort after Covid-19 thanks to her breathing training, was noticed in an article in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet on March 26. Anssi Sovijärvi says that breathing exercise can alleviate the problems in patients with chronic lung diseases such as asthma and COPD. It may also help people with respiratory problems after Covid-19.

Mr. Sovijärvi says that breathing training gets the respiratory muscles in better condition and can then better cope with acute and severe lung infections. He especially recommends people with COPD, asthma and abdominal obesity to exercise. He also emphasizes the importance for the elderly to practice breathing, as our breathing capacity decreases by 2 percent per year. A 70-year-old has only 50 percent of a 20-year-old's ventilation capacity.

Great interest in Sweden in the importance of breathing

– We have seen great interest among health-conscious Swedes in the breathing tool, says Patrik Wigelius, Nordic Manager of WellO2.

Breathing training is a health issue that has received increasing attention in Sweden and great focus has been placed on the importance of breathing during the corona pandemic. Many also say that they have received help for other respiratory problems, such as sleep apnea, difficulty sleeping, pollen allergy and relief from asthma and COPD.
