UK Chamber of Shipping launches competition to find new ideas that will change shipping

2020 03 03

The ‘Innovation Showcase’ competition will see new entrants to the shipping and maritime industry, such as MNTB cadets and apprentices, preparing and sending in an idea or concept they believe will change the shipping industry by making it greener and more sustainable. No idea or concept is too outlandish. We want to find a new product, idea or piece of technology which hasn’t been thought of before.

Entrants can choose how to submit their applications. It can be in a video, PowerPoint, word document, however it comes, it’s the concept that matter. There are no age restrictions either, you just have to be a new entrant to the industry meaning MNTB cadets, ratings or apprentices.

The competition is open for the next three months and will close on Monday 01 June 2020. A panel of judges will meet in July to assess the applications and pick the finalists. An event will be held later in the year where finalist will be invited to present their idea to the panel and the winner will pick up a grant funded by the panel to help develop their concept.

Launching the competition, UK Chamber of Shipping Director of Communications Alastair Clifton said:

“Shipping is going greener, but we need new ideas to ensure we reach the targets set by the UK government and the International Maritime Organisation. This competition will see new entrants to the shipping and maritime industry given the opportunity to get creative and think of things no one else has thought of before. The finalists will get to present to some of the industry’s biggest names and win a grant prize to develop their idea. We want as many great ideas as possible so get thinking and get creative!”

The judging panel will be made up of representatives from Carnival, Svitzer, Red Funnel, Vroon and BP Shipping.
