TOC Europe 2019: digitalization pioneers headline TOC Europe 2019

2019 06 07

Pioneers in Container Supply Chain digitalization will headline TOC Europe 2019, which takes place at Ahoy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands on 18-20 June 2019.

The 43rd edition of TOC Europe, co-located with the Container Supply Chain (CSC) Conference, focuses on leading-edge developments that aim to align container shipping, ports and logistics with the digital age.

In a powerhouse opening session to CSC, Mike White, CEO of Maersk GTD & Head of TradeLens, speaks on Automation & Digitalization – Shaping the New Maritime and Supply Chain Economy.

Maersk. GTD, or Global Trade Digitization, is the joint project formed last year by Maersk, the world's biggest container shipping line, and tech giant IBM.

Its aim is to bring global supply chains into the 21st century by digitizing them so as to reduce the cost of global shipping, improve visibility across supply chains and eliminate inefficiencies stemming from paper-based processes.

TradeLens recently welcomed on-board CMA CGM and MSC, respectively, the second and third largest container carriers. Along with other carriers committed to the platform, the addition of these two industry giants means that data for nearly half of the world's ocean container cargo will be available on TradeLens, providing a significant boost to the vision of greater trust, transparency, and collaboration across global supply chains.

Mr. White is followed by Thomas Bagge, CEO of the recently-launched Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA). DCSA was founded as recently as April this year by major container carriers - A.P. Moller–Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC and ONE - with the express aim to drive forward digital standardization in the container shipping industry. The body now also includes CMA CGM, Evergreen Line, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Yang Ming, and ZIM in its membership.

Mr. Bagge will speak to the issue of Driving Standardization, Digitalization and Interoperability in Container Shipping. To create value quickly and to overcome some of the biggest pain-points in the industry, one of the DCSA's first projects is to focus on standards to overcome the lack of a common foundation for technical interfaces and data.

DCSA is also creating an industry blueprint for processes. The work undertaken will be for the benefit of the entire industry, as all standards will be openly published, making them available free of charge to interested external parties.

Oscar van Veen, Director - Digital Labs at Port of Rotterdam, then outlines why Rotterdam is spearheading the vision for 'Globally Connected Ports' through the formation of its port call optimization platform 'Pronto'.

Last year, Port of Rotterdam Authority launched this platform to combine a variety of data sources so that a port call by a vessel can be planned as accurately as possible. This way, activities that must take place during each port call can be seamlessly coordinated with each other to help 'just-in-time' shipping.

A study commissioned by the Port Authority, concluded that if sea-going vessels were better informed about the availability of berths and adapted their speed accordingly, substantial savings could be made in terms of fuel and CO2 emissions.

The study's results were presented in October last year to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Then in February this year, IMO formed the Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (GIA) to bring together industry stakeholders to discuss the establishment of 'just-in-time' operations as a means to reduce time vessels spend idling before entering the port.

Rounding off the CSC opening morning is an examination of DP World's 'revolution' in physical container handling 'BOXBAY'.

Patrick Bol, Director Global Operations at DP World, and Mathias Dobner, CEO of BOXBAY, explain how this new international joint venture aims to change the way that containers are handled in ports in the session Compressing the Supply Chain.

'BOXBAY' represents a new and intelligent High Bay Storage (HBS) system that will be ready in time for the Dubai Expo 2020 with a pilot project scheduled at Jebel Ali Terminal 4. The design and rack structure of the system creates unique advantages with containers stored up to eleven stories high, delivering the capacity of a conventional terminal over just one third of the surface area.

Tech TOC

Running alongside CSC is the hugely popular Tech TOC, which builds on many of the issues debated within CSC concerning digitalization and disruptive technologies and examines how these will impact day-to-day container handling in modern terminals.

One session on Tuesday 18 June showcases the progress of TIC 4.0. Established under the auspices of the Port Equipment Manufacturers Association (PEMA), one of the objectives of TIC 4.0 is to establish closer technical interaction between container terminals and equipment manufacturers to elaborate industry standards that favour the development of Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and further technological innovations for the whole sector.

Headlined as Defining Standards to Engage in the 4th Industrial Revolution, the session features contributions from Lamia Kerdjoudj-Belkaid, Secretary-General of Feport, Luisa Kempf, Site Director Technical Services Hamburg, at Eurogate: and Frank Kho, Senior Advisor, Kho Management.

Visitors to the TOC Europe exhibition are free to drop into the Tech TOC Seminar Zone, where these and other mission-critical issues will be discussed with the aim of achieving solid efficiency gains in terminal operations.
