UTLC ERA launches new Luxembourg - Chengdu rail shipping route

2019 04 17

The first container train on the Luxembourg – Chengdu route was sent by JSC United Transport and Logistics Company – Eurasian Rail Alliance (UTLC ERA) as part of its freight shipping services on April 10, 2019. The container train left Luxembourg on April 5 and switched from the narrow to the wide track gauge at Malaszewicze station in Poland. On April 10 the train departed from the Belarusian Railways Brest-Vostochniy station. It is expected that the train will arrive at the Kazakhstan-China border on April 15. The train consists of 41 40-foot shipping containers with wine, textiles and general cargo. The new route will be used for container trains on a regular basis starting from the second quarter of 2019.

The section of the route running through the EU is operated by Belintertrans – Transport and Logistics Centre of the Belarusian Railway (SE "BTLC"), the Belarus Railway (BCh) state enterprise. The part of the route running on the 1520 mm gauge is operated by UTLC ERA.

In 2018 JSC UTLC ERA introduced six additional routes increasing their total number to 57. The company's services are used by shippers from 16 new cities in China and the European Union.

“Sending a train operated by UTLC ERA from Luxembourg to China is very important for us as this is compelling evidence that countries which are relatively small players in the shipping industry are joining traditional ‘heavyweights’ in using our rail transit services. They have the highest demands in terms of quality of service and transportation costs. We need to prove on practice the efficiency of this means of transport to cargo owners in the Duchy of Luxembourg and we will do our best. We expect that it will be a route in high demand with good growth dynamics by the second half of the year,” – said UTLC ERA President Alexey Grom.

The volume of container rail transit on China – Europe – China routes reached 350 thousand TEU in 2018, an increase of 35% compared to the previous year. The share of cargo transported by UTLC ERA through the border crossing points Dostyk and Altynkol, according to the results of 2018, amounted to 83% of the gross shipping volume. In total, 280.5 thousand TEU were transported along the route by UTLC ERA in 2018, an increase of 60% compared to 2017.
