Hill Dickinson Hong Kong boosts shipping practice

Leading commercial law firm Hill Dickinson has appointed two senior hires to join its Hong Kong office. Counsel and registered foreign lawyer Edward Liu and Counsel Antony Cowie both joined on 22 October 2018.

Edward, a qualified solicitor in England and Wales and a lawyer in P.R China, joins the team as counsel from Reed Smith Richards Butler where he spent about eight years in total in its shipping litigation team. In December 2017 he was listed by Lloyd’s List as one of the ‘Top Five in the Next Generation in Shipping’ and recommended as a ‘Leading heavyweight lawyer of the future’, symbolizing a new generation of Asian lawyers.

His practice covers all areas of maritime and commercial law, including charter party and shipbuilding contract disputes, MOA matters, cargo claims, general average, marine insurance and sale of goods disputes. He handles in a wide variety of cases of different types and sizes under LMAA Terms and HKIAC administered arbitration rules.

Antony also joins the team as counsel. He is an England and Wales and Hong Kong qualifed lawyer with considerable experience in the Far East. He has worked both in private practice, with firms such as Reed Smith Richards Butler and Howse Williams Bowers, as well as in-house with a leading shipbroker and more recently as head of legal and insurance for one of the leading shipmanagers.

He has a wide range of of corporate, finance and commercial transactional experience across a range of sectors, including shipping, financial services, technology, medical services and equipment and media and entertainment.

Edward brings with him more than eight years’ experience to the role and will be a great addition to our shipping practice and Antony’s practical industry experience will be a significant asset for both our shipping and corporate clients.”
