Klaipėda LNG Terminal Receives 50th Cargo

2018 05 31

The 50th LNG reloading operation took place at the Klaipėdos LNG terminal in Lithuania last week. 140,000 cubic meters of LNG was delivered by Arctic Voyager from a liquefaction plant in Norway.

The terminal, operated by Klaipėdos Nafta, has supplied about half of all the natural gas consumed in Lithuania, with the gas supplied from Norway, the U.S., Trinidad and Tobago and Nigeria. It has also been supplied to Latvia and Estonia.

Since October 2014, when the FSRU Independence began operations, the terminal has received 42 LNG imports amounting to 5.4 million cubic meters of LNG. The average size each load has been 139,000 cubic meters of LNG, while the largest shipment was delivered by the Valencia Knutsen, which has a capacity of 173,000 cubic meters, the capacity of Independence.

The terminal has been operating for three and a half years and is among the most efficient LNG terminals in Europe in terms of capacity utilization, having operated at over 90 percent capacity at times. Utilization of the terminal is boosted by the reloading of LNG to small-scale LNG vessels. The first such reloading operation was performed in the beginning of 2017, when the first small-scale LNG vessel, the Coral Energy, was received and loaded at the terminal.

After successfully reloading LNG from the FSRU, LNG export activities gained momentum, and since early 2017, the terminal has already performed eight LNG reloads for re-export to small-scale LNG import terminals in Sweden, Finland and Norway. Lithuania has become the 12th country in the world that LNG is re-exported from.

When the terminal's LNG reloading station that loads LNG road tankers went into operation at the end of 2017, it became the first floating LNG terminal in the world offering a complete range of integrated LNG logistics services: LNG reloading, storage, gasification, and supply by land or sea.

The FSRU, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, is part of a 10-year charger from Höegh LNG established in March 2012. The FSRU brought greater gas supply flexibility to the country that was previously dependent on gas pipelines from Russia.
