TOC Americas to dock in Peru for the first time in 17 years

2017 06 07

The most important conference and exhibition for the maritime and port logistics and transport industry in the Americas has set a date: October 17 - 19, with the port of Lima debuting as host. The National Port Authority (NPA) will be in charge of the keynote speech and organise the networking reception for delegates, sponsors and exhibitors on Tuesday, October 17.
Now regarded as a tradition at TOC events, the programme of complementary activities and networking events is open to all conference delegates. At TOC Americas 2017, there will be a guided visit to the Port of Callao and its two main terminals: Muelle Sur (south dock), operated by DP World and Muelle Norte (north dock), operated by APM Terminals. Both tours take place on Monday, October 16. Later that same evening there will be a Welcome Cocktail Reception at the Westin Lima Hotel, sponsored by DP World Callao.
In addition to the conference and networking programme, attendees can enjoy luncheons with fellow delegates and on the night of Wednesday, October 18 there will be a Closing Networking Reception organised by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Peru.

Concession and first class operation
The Port of Callao is one of the main ports on the West Coast South America (WCSA). Its strategic location connects WCSA with the main ports around the world and is the gateway for products into one of the most important economies in the region - Peru.
The multipurpose Port of Callao is the third largest in South America and the largest in both Peru and the WCSA. It has three specialised terminals, including the South Dock, operated by DP World. With an approximate investment of US$ 510 million, the South Dock began operations in 2010 and quickly emerged as the main container terminal in Peru thanks to its modern infrastructure and its superb operational excellence, which has allowed it to manage over one million TEU. It stands out for its 650 metre-long berth with a depth of 16 metres and 28 cranes, including 7 Super Post-Panamax gantry cranes and 21 RTG yard cranes, as well as state-of-the-art IT equipment that ensures operational and container tracking.
APM Terminals Callao, operator of the North Dock, received the MSC Flavia, the first Neopanamax vessel that docked on the coast of South America, and the largest containership to dock in the region with nearly 13,000 TEU capacity. From Balboa, Panama, the vessel sailed through to Buenaventura, Colombia, before calling in Peru. While the MSC Flavia was in port 1,606 containers were handled, representing 104.09 movements/hour, with an average crane productivity of 33,64 m/hr. A few weeks later a new record was set with the containership MSC Regulus with a capacity of 13,119 TEU.
Callao has become one of the favourite ports for carriers from all over the world. APL, global container transport leader, recently added calling in Callao to its west coast route due to the port’s strategic location within the region. Efrain Osorio, regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean for APL (and a frequent speaker at TOC Americas conference over the years) commented that “the Port of Callao is Peru’s main port, handling a significant container volume of the country’s total maritime cargo. Along with the WCS service that calls in Callao, we are excited to offer shippers access to and from this main gate for import/export.”

One event, three themes
TOC Americas 2017 will have three conference themes: Container Supply Chain (including a Cold Supply Chain session), Container and Terminal Operations and for the first time at TOC Americas, a specialised session on Bulk Technology and Logistics. There will be also an app specially created for the occasion, allowing delegates to ask questions anonymously and take part in real-time polls.
In parallel to the conference, there will be an exhibition of international and local companies linked to the industry showcasing the latest innovations in port technology and equipment. Confirmed exhibitors include Hyster, Bromma, PowerPool Plus, Musco Lighting, Houcon, RAM Spreaders and ZPMC, among others.
