Hanjin Group's Uzbekistan logistics air hub scheme reaches milestone

2012 03 26

HANJIN Group's Navoi Project to develop Uzbekistan Navoi Airport into an international logistics hub in Central Asia has reached an important milestone with the opening of the residential HJ Navoi Complex.

Korean Air, a core subsidiary of Hanjin Group, held a ceremony to open the complex in an 18,188-square-metre site near Navoi International Airport, to support the development of the Navoi Free Industrial-Economic Zone (FIEZ). With the opening of the complex, the group expects it will be able to create a new logistics market as the logistics volume passing through FIEZ has been increasing. It will also assist the Uzbekistan government in attracting more foreign businesses.

Mr Chang Hoon Chi, president and COO of Korean Air said: "HJ Navoi Complex is the first chapter in Hanjin Group's efforts to develop an advanced logistics complex in the FIEZ area. This facility will not only provide a stable and pleasant residential environment for the regional workers in Navoi but will also contribute in attracting foreign businesses to the Navoi FIEZ area."

Navoi FIEZ is a 5-million-square-metre site created by local government legislation in 2008 and the Uzbekistan government is working to accelerate foreign investment in electricity, electronic, machinery, petro-chemistry and medicine. Companies from 17 countries, including South Korea, China, Oman, Singapore and India, are constructing facilities in the area.

Hanjin Group has been conducting a variety of projects to turn Navoi into a logistics hub for Central Asia since it first began operating cargo flights to Navoi in August 2008, a company statement said.

Since January 2009, the group has been managing Navoi International Airport in conjunction with the Uzbekistan government. In January 2010 Hanjin Transportation co-established the Eurasia Logistics Service with one of the local ground transport companies in Navoi and in August 2010. They built a new Navoi Cargo Terminal designed to handle 100,000 tonnes of cargo a year to strengthen the ground network of Central Asia.
