The Sea birthday at the sea gate

Algis Grazulis

In the middle of the hottest summer Sea magazine celebrated its birthday. This year it was the 66th anniversary.
It is a magic figure and a nice occasion to celebrate.
At sunset the staff of the Sea and magazine’s numerous admires gathered on the northern pier of the sea gates.
The high capacity cranes, lifting the debris of the sunken ships, suction dredgers and sailing vessels in the background - added a unique charm to the celebration. It was the first time when the pier served not just for its proper purpose - to break waves and protect the sea gates against them - but became a festivity place. On their arrival the guests - representatives of sea business companies, Lithuanian Seamen’ s Union, the Masters’ Club, members of the Seym and Government of the Republic of Lithuania, local authority of Klaipeda city and foreign visitors - were greeted by the mariners of the Lithuanian Navy and accompanied by them along the nicely decorated pier to the celebration place. The magazine owner and editor-in-chief Zita Tallat-Kelpsaite welcomed the most faithful friends of the Sea. She reminded the guests that the magazine Sea was founded in Klaipeda in 1935 by Lithuanian Seamen’s Union and Lithuanian Women’s Union to support of national fleet. The aim of the magazine was to cherish marine ideas in Lithuania, help in creating a sea state. After it revived in 1999 and became an international trilingual publication, the magazine continues the traditions of its precursors raising much bigger aims - to present the reader an objective business analysis, to induce co-operation between Eastern and Western markets, to introduce Lithuanian to the world as an attractive sea transit state, where there are good conditions created for investments and long-termed business relations.
The merits of the magazine in this field were recognised by the Ministry of Communications of Lithuania. In the letter of congratulation to the Sea the Minister of Communications Zigmantas Balcytis emphasised the contribution of the magazine in the shaping the image of Lithuanian transport sector at the international level.

At sunset and under the music of pianist S.Siauciulis and Klaipeda wind-instrument quintet the guests were demonstrated the collection of clothes Tricks of Striped Souls created specially for this festival. A festal fire was burning, prayers were read to the sea and the sacrifice was made to the sea gods. The Vetra restaurant, Svyturys brewery, stock company Kraitene treated the guests.
The participants of Sea birthday party wished that the festival on the pier would become one more tradition initiated by the magazine.
Last year the international business magazine Sea together with the Authority of Klaipeda State Sea Port, first time in the whole history of sea business of Lithuania, established awards for the most distinguished sea business companies. The award was called by the name of hurricane Anatolijus blown over Klaipeda. At the beginning of this year the most distinct sea business stars were solemly awarded at Klaipeda Drama Theatre.
The representatives of sea business enthusiastically support the initiative of the magazine to join the efforts in creating the image of the country as a sea state and in strengthening national sea traditions.
