| Cargo turnover in Klaipeda
port
During the period of January-August 2001, 11.8
million tons of cargo were handled in Klaipeda Port and it is by 15.9% less than during
the same period last year. The backwardness from the last year
record level significantly decreased in August. In comparison with 1999, 18.0% more cargo
was handled. 8.1 million tons of cargo was handled without AB Klaipedos
nafta (KN), while KN handled 3.7 million tons. This August
there were handled 1.4 million tons, i.e. by 10.2% less than in July due to the decrease
of cargo flows in KN. Cargo turnover grew in August by 4.1% compared with July this year.
Both loading and discharge volumes increased. The cargo turnover
in KN was considerably less in August than in July.
KLASCO department – International Ferry Terminal - shows stable
results.It exceeded the volumes of the last year by 26.8%. UAB Lietuvisku durpiu krova
and UAB Baltijos keltu terminalas exceeded the cargo handling volumes in comparison
with the same period last year.
After the decrease of cargo volumes during the previous months the
stevedoring company Bega significantly increased cargo turnover in August, but the
backwardness from the level of 2000 still remained. After the
decline in July cargo turnover in AB Klaipedos Smelte increased in August by 37.1%,
but the backwardness from the level of 2000 can be clearly seen. Consortium
Klaipedos terminalas is coming nearer to the level of the last year and the
backwardness has decreased to 7.2%. The new Malku ilankos
terminalas loaded 4 vessels and in total – 11 vessels since the start of its
activities.
Among other operators AB Klaipedos hidrotechnika, AB Vakaru
laivu remontas and some other small operators handled more cargo than during the same
period last year.
KLASCO handled less cargo in August than in July. Cargo turnover of KN in August:

8007 wagons were handled since the beginning of the year and the
level of the last year was exceeded by 19.3%, of 1999 – by 22.6%. 80025 road vehicles were handled since the beginning of the year. The level
of the last year was exceeded by 20.6%, and of 1999 – by 40.5%. The number of all types
of road vehicles grew by one fourth in comparison with the last year. The volumes of
automobiles decreased in August in comparison with July this year. 33 197 TEU were handled this year. The level of the same
period of the last year was exceeded by 26.0%, and of 1999 – by 75.0%. During eight months of this year KLASCO handled 55.3%, Klaipedos
terminalas – 39.8%, other operators – 4.9% of the total cargo turnover of Klaipeda
port. 12 254 passengers were served in August and it was the
biggest number of passengers this year; 66 445 passengers were served since the beginning
of the year, the backwardness from the level of eight months of the last year is 8.0%. In
comparison with 1999 it grew by 26.3%. 527 vessels were
loaded/discharged in August, total figure is 4012 (73.4% of them were foreign vessels) and
the backwardness from the level of the last year decreased to 10,0%. In comparison with
the level of 1999 the number of vessels increased by 9.1%. 4
tankers were loaded in August in Butinge SPM and 35 tankers - since the beginning of the
year.
Cargo
turnover in the ports on the eastern coast
of the Baltic Sea
Cargo handling volumes increased in all
three biggest Latvian ports; their total tur nover – 34.4 million tons - increased
by 12.3%. Volumes of oil and oil products are increasing in Ventspils
port (oil products increased by 12.0%), volumes of steel and metal reached 689.0
thousand tons (by 13.0% more than last year), alloys – 35.0 thousand tons, fertilizers
3.0million tons – and it is by 3.0% more, molasses decreased by 19.0% (discharged 209.0
thousand tons), handling of liquid chemical products decreased by 15.0% (loaded 537,0
thousand tons), handling of timber decreased by 17.0% (loaded 267.0 thousand tons) and
907.0 thousand tons of coal was loaded (last year they no coal was handled). The volumes of oil products in Riga port increased by 35.0% in
comparison with the last year and it makes 2.3 million tons (in Klaipeda – 3.4 million
tons), handling of steel and metal decreased (754.8 thousand tons), 891.1 thousand tons of
fertilizers loaded in the port and it is by 9.6% more, 2.5 million tons of timber,
increased by 3.7%, handling of sugar increased more than six times (244.5 thousand tons),
114.4 thousand tons of peat were handled and it is 1.9 times more, 446.1 thousand tons of
coal and ore were handled in the port (no coal and ore last year), 17.3 thousand tons of
cotton – by 7.0% less, handling of containers grew by 23.6% (42 603 TEU, in Klaipeda 28
903 TEU), handling of Ro-Ro cargo showed increase.
Handling of oil products in Liepaja grew by 35.5% (loaded 355.3
thousand tons), ro-ro cargo increased by 36.2%, whereas handling of trailers significantly
decreased, handling of timber increased by 5.3% (432.3 thousand tons), 341.4 thousand tons
of metal was handled in the port (increase of 4.2%). 26.7 thousand tons of peat –
decrease of 26.8%, three times less containers were handled in the port.
The volumes of liquid fertilizers increased by 11.2% in Tallinn
port (12.3 million tons handled), handling of ro-ro cargo increased by 9.4%, dry bulk
decreased significantly, 46 998 TEU handled (1.7% more than last year). The total decrease
of dry bulk handling was by 10.2%. 11 274 TEU were handled in Kaliningrad
port and it is by 16.2% more than last year.
4.5 million tons of oil products were handled in St. Petersburg
port, it is by 11.0% more than last year, 4.7 million tons of metal (16.0% more), reefer
cargo – 1.5 million tons (1.5 times more), 2.1 million tons of coal and ore (almost 1.5
times more), 2.1 million tons of chemical cargo (decrease by 11.0%), 258 640 TEU were
handled in the port and it is by 1.5 times more.
The cargo handling volumes without oil is the biggest in
Klaipeda port after St. Petersburg. Handling of containers in
the ports on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea: Ventspils port
had no containers this year; Handling of containers in Liepaja
port decreased almost 3 times; In other ports handling of
containers increased – more than 1.5 times in St. Petersburg, the least growth was in
Tallinn – 1.7% (in Klaipeda port the growth was 22.8%).
Volumes of containers in 2001: the biggest volumes in
St. Petersburg, then Tallinn follows – 5.5 times less, Riga and Klaipeda – still less,
Kaliningrad – the least.
Ventspils and Riga ports increased cargo turnover when they started to
handle coal and ore. St. Petersburg increased handling of this type of cargo 1.5 times. |
